"In manufacturing, quality is defined as being “a measure of excellence or a state of being free from defects, deficiencies, and significant variations, where (high) quality is brought about by the strict and consistent adherence to measurable and verifiable standards to achieve uniformity of output that satisfies specific customer or user requirements”. Several different techniques for examining casting “quality” as it relates to high pressure die cast alloy A380 have been evaluated in the as-cast conditions. The roles of three simple parameters are considered: a) metal velocity at the gate, b) the effect of increased Cu or Zn content, and c) the effect of rotary degassing on a recycled melt. The derivations used to evaluate casting quality are described and results presented. Application to industrially produced components manufactured from ADC12 alloy (A383) ranging up to ~23kg (50lbs) will be described separately. Importantly, the quality derivation also suggests that most pressure die castings produced today actually achieve less than 20% of their potential. In this seminar, the basis and use of the quality models will be demonstrated. It will be shown how use of these methodologies can facilitate improvements in casting quality by identifying and prioritizing key systematic defects within castings."
